Students Are Ready to Crack Code


The list of digital instruments and interactions your students are accessing is growing. These kids might understand how to use all these various platforms, but do they understand what goes on beneath the hood?

Digital literacy has gone beyond the user stage. Children need to understand how to write code to be genuinely effective digital citizens of the future. Already the job marketplace is heavily centered in the electronic world, and to compete today, and later on, understanding computer code is a major benefit.

The prospect of teaching children how to code freaks teachers out. Particularly primary school teachers, a lot of whom were working flat out to keep abreast of how to use the software and hardware that has been rapidly appearing in their own classrooms. The new Australian federal curriculum indicates that computer programming should now to be taught from age 5.

But coding? Do not you have to be an engineer or something to do that? Is not that something that you learn in a computer science degree?

It is time that coding is de-mystified for non-tech teachers. Simple coding skills are now readily available to anyone with an internet connection. Teachers, for example with many subject areas they teach, no longer have to be an expert to teach coding. They could access online programs and tutorials and ease their pupils to learn from them, and direct them on how they might use their new skills.

Codecademy is a great example of a free resource for students and teachers to find coding. Already professionals are using these tutorials to expand their particular abilities and expand their career prospects. Jobs requiring coding abilities and comprehension pay well and are difficult to staff. A computer science degree is no longer necessary, just exercise and skill growth.

Children are going to love the problem solving part of communicating. Get them building simple games, blogs and sites, harness their Minecraft obsession by coding add ons for the sport. I dare say that educators taking the plunge into this new world of technology teaching will find it exciting, and also the possibilities for extension and development are enormous.
